Christians have been electing Republican politicians into office for more than a generation. This is the result of constant promises to bring traditional family values back to the nation. The Republican Party has failed to deliver on their promises. Nothing has changed. Abortions are still high as ever. Families are still breaking apart. Evangelical Christians voted to change the morality of the nation. Sadly, the only thing their votes changed was the tax code. God is Not a Republican is a political book about religion as well as a religious book about politics. The author explores today’s major issues from both biblical and political perspective. Dixon brings new insight and understanding to controversial issues. He approaches each issue from the concept of Oppressive Freedom. Some of the issues included in this book Abortion and Reproductive Rights, Health Care Reform, Gay Rights and Marriage Equality, Race Matters, Capitalism and the Morality of Tax Policy In addition to the issues, the author weaves a historical narrative of the Republican mobilization and manipulation of Evangelical Christians. The names, Republican and Evangelical, are all but synonymous in today’s political discourse. The author explores how this phenomenon is the result of years of targeting Christian voters by Republican strategists. Religious rhetoric by politicians has attracted the Christian voter. Dixon also examines the nature of the conservative ideological religion that is the result of the generation long union between the Republican Party and Evangelical Christianity and how several of the Party’s platform planks are glaring contradictions the Christian faith. Finally, the author explores the true role of religion in the United States and how the entire nation can benefit from political leaders who, instead of merely talking about Jesus, sincerely act like Jesus.

While the title implies a bias against Republicans, reading the book proves otherwise. Not far in, the author states that "God is not a Democrat, either." What this book is out to prove is that conflating religion with politics is a dangerous game, as our Founding Fathers well knew when they established the "wall of separation" between religion and state. Readers wanting a thoughtful and essentially unbiased account of the incursion of religion into politics will enjoy this book.

...but He is most certainly a conservative, since conservatism is merely the practical, day to day application of Godly morality and wisdom - properly understood from the entirety of biblical revelation. Those who see "progressive" or "left-wing" political support from Scripture are (either through ignorance or intention) cherry-picking what they want and ignoring the rest.
God is not a Republican is an excellent book. If you're like me - a Christian who has been very unhappy about the unholy marriage between evangelical Christianity and the Republican Party, you will find a book that clearly speaks to you. I pray that all Christians would be open to Dixon's message. He comes across as a man who loves the Lord and has also been concerned about the cause of Christ being mistaken for conservative politics. I have news for my fellow Christians - they are not the same! I came from a staunch Democratic family and when I made a personal commitment to Christ, I was more than happy to vote for Jimmy Carter the year he ran for the presidency. But over time, our leaders and pastors told us the Republican Party was God's party. This caused me to just hate voting because I felt it was God's will to vote Republican even though I do not agree with the philosophy of government the Republicans believe. This shift hinges on two issues Christian leaders have focused the church on to the exclusion of other important issues - abortion and gay marriage. Somehow if we just let the Republicans run the country and we outlawed these two things, America would be a "Christian nation". This thinking is so pitiful. After 30 years of voting for Republicans, we still have women getting abortions and gay marriage being approved by more and more states. I would suggest that if Christians really wanted to protect traditional marriage, they would seek legislation to outlaw divorce, but, of course, that would hit too close to home for many people in the church. I am so grateful that Benjamin Dixon and others are starting to speak out about this issue. We need voices like him to wake Christians up to the fact that it is ok to vote for the person who best represents your true political beliefs and economic interests rather than be manipulated by evangelical leaders who want you to believe that only the Republican Party represents Christian values. God is so much bigger than Republican or Democrat. And it is time that Christians be about the work of evangelism and buiding Christ's kingdom by reaching out in love to all instead of building up the Republican Party or the Tea Party to push our moral views on others and cause others to reject Christ because of our politics.
Very balanced, but critical, view of Republican political positions that have frequently been adopted by evangelical/conservative Christians. Dated, written during Obama administration; but still pertinent. The author is black and a conservative Christian.
Amazing scholarly work! The content is more prevalent today than when it was first published. It is a heart-tugging, self-evaluating, reality check! It should be on the recommended reading list for all public leaders, policy makers, professors, philosophers, and preachers. Bravo, Mr. Dixon!
Yes very good book explains all of the reasons why I am disturbed with the Republican Party In My Heart analyzes Bible Authority in things that matter and all things matter put into words why I don't like Republicans and in the general idea that God has no affiliation and separation of church and state is Paramount
A prophetic, especially authentic, book for the times we live in--where ideology and conscientious stupidity are pervasive in pews and politics.
